Upper School
GRADES 6 - 10
Our curriculum follows the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) and ISB was the first school in the world authorized to offer this prestigious programme, a fact in which we take great pride.
Our philosophy and practices strive to enable students to become critical thinkers, as well as confident responsible learners. Our Programme focuses on skill development and formative learning – a learning that does not educate in a vacuum but relates knowledge and thinking skills from subject to subject, building from grade to grade. The ultimate aim of our programme is that students take with them a sense of Inquiry, and a love of knowledge.

A recent study conducted in the UK by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) shows that students enrolled in International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme stand out from the crowd. Read the research summary published by the International Baccalaureate.
We believe that students leaving our programme will be different persons from the ones that arrived. They will be wiser, more organized, more knowledgeable, globally aware and well prepared.
We see that more than 80% of our students continue to the Diploma Programme at either local or overseas IB schools.
At ISB we work to build an Upper School Community, one that balances academics with activities in the rich and beautiful environment of Bergen and the south-western coast of Norway. In line with this aim every grade has the opportunity to take part in extended field trips in each year of the programme here are the details
- Grade 6: Week long Cultural trip to Oslo.
- Grade 7: 4 day trip to an outdoor education centre.
- Grade 8: Two short outdoor educational trips eg: Winter experience Mjølfjell or coasteering additional
- Grade 9: Ski week in Voss.
- Grade 10: European trip with an Action as Service theme. Bike unit trip Rallarvegen
